Career Pivot

What prompted you to want to pivot industries?

After almost 4 years in a client-service role (i.e. Deloitte), I wanted to have the opportunity to experience being a finance operator, which led me to my current company at Google.

What was the interview process like?

Long! I had 3+ rounds, meeting 5+ people and a range of technical and non-technical interview questions.

What are 3 skills you think are foundational as a Strategic Finance Operator?

1. Analytical
2. Storytelling
3. Collaborative

Advice for someone diving into an ambiguous problem for the first time?

Start with a clear problem statement; what are you trying to solve for and why does it matter? Knowing how to think about these two statements are powerful in steering your framework in solving the problem.

The Commons

What is your favorite part about being a mentor?

  1. It’s great meeting and learning about everyone’s background and what is motivating them to have first hand experience in strategic finance
  2. I love getting to learn from other mentors and expand my own strategic finance skillset

Tell us about your role!

What’s the role and your objectives?

My role is largely financial planning and analysis for YouTube Subscriptions products. The primary goal is to grow the portfolio of non-Ads products at YouTube.

Tell us about a cool project you’ve worked on

Project Objective: Long-term financials of YouTube
Project Overview: Building an equity research-like presentation to understand the value of YouTube
Your Role: Comparing and contrasting external v.s. internal financial projections of YouTube

Advice for someone who wants to follow your footsteps?

Sometimes the place you want to get to requires taking a lateral move first and that’s okay! Getting to where you want to be may not take the straightest path there.

Some fun stuff!
